The Curriculum at Roman Hill Primary School.

Intent

Our curriculum is underpinned by the belief that every child is entitled to a broad, balanced and ambitious education that enables them to achieve their full potential. It is designed in line with the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework to ensure pupils develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to succeed in learning and in life.

The curriculum is coherently planned and carefully sequenced so that knowledge builds progressively over time, enabling pupils to know more, remember more and do more. High-quality schemes of work, including CUSP, White Rose Maths, Kapow Primary, Jigsaw PSHE, AccessArt and Get Set 4 PE, are used to ensure subject integrity, consistency and ambition across all areas of learning, while allowing flexibility to meet the needs of all pupils.

We are committed to raising pupils’ cultural capital by providing rich learning experiences, high-quality texts, meaningful enrichment and opportunities to explore the wider world. Strong cross-curricular links are made where they deepen understanding and help pupils to apply their learning in different contexts. Reading, oracy and vocabulary development are prioritised across the curriculum to support access, engagement and academic success.

Personal development is woven throughout the curriculum. Through our teaching and wider curriculum, pupils develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, and are supported to understand and demonstrate British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We aim to develop confident, resilient and respectful learners who are well prepared for the next stage of education and to play a positive role in society

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to give all pupils the knowledge, skills and vocabulary they need to achieve well and make progress. Teaching across the school follows a consistent six-part lesson structure so that learning is clear, well organised and builds over time.

Lessons begin with a Connect phase where pupils revisit prior learning and make links to new ideas. New learning is introduced through Explain and Example phases, where teachers model concepts clearly and introduce key vocabulary. Pupils then practise their learning in the Attempt phase before moving on to the Apply phase, where they work more independently. Challenge opportunities are built into lessons to deepen understanding and extend learning.

Vocabulary is taught explicitly in every lesson to help pupils understand and talk confidently about their learning. In foundation subjects, regular quizzing is used to check understanding and help pupils remember key knowledge over time.

The curriculum is inclusive and accessible for all pupils. Scaffolding, adaptations and additional support are in place to ensure pupils with SEND can take part fully in lessons while still being appropriately challenged. High expectations are maintained for all learners.

Pupils are also given a range of opportunities to take part in trips and visits that support classroom learning. These experiences help to bring the curriculum to life, deepen understanding and build pupils’ cultural capital.

Impact

Through our curriculum, we aim for all pupils to make strong progress from their starting points and develop secure knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subjects. Pupils are supported to revisit prior learning, make connections between topics, and apply what they have been taught with growing confidence and independence.

We work to ensure that pupils can use subject-specific vocabulary accurately and are able to talk about their learning with increasing clarity. Regular quizzing and opportunities to revisit learning support pupils in remembering key knowledge over time, particularly in foundation subjects. Work in books and classroom activities show that learning is structured progressively, with clear expectations for all.

Our teaching approaches are designed to ensure that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access the curriculum and work towards ambitious outcomes. Scaffolding, adaptations and challenge opportunities help pupils to deepen their understanding and develop higher-level thinking skills.

Pupils are encouraged to be engaged, resilient and independent learners. Trips, visits and wider experiences complement classroom learning, enhancing understanding and supporting the development of pupils’ cultural capital. Through this approach, we aim for every pupil to make good progress and be well prepared for the next stage of their education
